POSITION: TEEN/YOUTH SERVICES – LIBRARIAN I, FULL-TIME

The Nutley Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and service-oriented Youth Services Tween & Teen Librarian (Librarian I) to join our dynamic team. This full-time position will specialize in services for tweens and teens (grades 6–12) while also supporting children of all ages and their families through inclusive programming, outreach, and reference services.

Under the supervision of the Head of Youth Services, the ideal candidate will develop engaging and innovative programs for youth and teens, foster a welcoming environment for after-school visitors, and build strong connections with local schools and community organizations.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and lead programs for tweens and teens, including book clubs, workshops, gaming events, and makerspace/STEAM activities.
  • Plan and implement early childhood programs such as story times for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.
  • Assist with coordinating the Summer Reading Program for children from birth through grade 12.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise an active corps of teen volunteers.
  • Provide readers’ advisory and reference services to children, teens, families, and educators.
  • Create teen-focused book displays, booklists, digital content, and promotional materials.
  • Manage the selection, ordering, linking, and weeding of young adult materials, including print, digital, multimedia, and video games within budget.
  • Collaborate with local schools and organizations to promote library services and provide outreach.
  • Maintain and update youth service pages on the library’s website, calendar, and social media accounts.
  • Support library public relations efforts by creating flyers, calendars, press releases, and brochures.
  • Prepare monthly statistical and narrative reports for the Library Director and Board of Trustees.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities for youth programming.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
  • Ensure a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for young patrons.
  • Performs library in-charge duties and assist with building supervision as required.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Valid New Jersey Professional Librarian Certification issued by Thomas Edison State University.
  • One-three (1-3) years’ experience working with children and teens in libraries, education, or community organizations.
  • Strong knowledge of youth and young adult literature, digital media, and popular culture.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in technology, including BCCLS tools, databases, e-services, Canva, Constant Contact, Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Polaris/Leap, and social media tools.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to forty (40) pounds.
  • Availability to work one-two (1–2) evenings per week and alternate Saturdays.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule based on departmental needs.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Salary: $60,286.00. This is a permanent, full-time, civil service, union position for thirty-five (35) hours per week.  Appointment will be provisional, pending NJ Civil Service procedures. Prorated vacation, sick leave, and personal time. Medical and NJ State pension benefits. Evening and weekend hours required (one-two (1-2) evenings per week / one (1) Saturday per two weeks). This position requires residency in the State of New Jersey and a valid NJ Driver’s License. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment physical.
